In addition to the Spaceguard Center at Bisei, a Spaceguard Center is
now under construction at Kamisaibara. In contrast to the Spaceguard
Center at Bisei, which carries out astronomical observation with optical
equipment, the Spaceguard Center at Kamisaibara (KSGC) is designed for
astronomical observation using radar. Radar is an effective means of detecting
space debris at low altitude, while the optical equipment is best suited
for observing celestial bodies at high altitude such as geostationary
transfer orbit. The combined offers of these two facilities will allow
more systematic observation of space debris around the Earth.
Both Spaceguard Centers are for official astronomical observation rather
than for public use. However, both centers invite visitors to drop in
and view the informative displays to learn about the research taking place.
